United had plenty of possession and territorial advantage in the first half of the Final but they were unable to press home their advantage and Kevin Dearden in the Spurs goal was untested. Peter Beadle headed Spurs into the lead three minutes before Half-Time and when John Hendry added a second ten minutes into the second half it was enough to seal the game. Again, Leeds chose not to use any of their substitutes and Gary O'Hara, Steve Tobin, Mark Humphries, Noel Whelan and Ryan Nicholls were unused. While Leeds had easily beaten Liverpool, Spurs had progressed to the final with a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday but in the play-off for third place Liverpool had prevailed 4-3.
